ABSTRACT. We often think in theatre and dance as activities made to tell a story, represent characters, communicate a specific meaning. But nowadays, in numerous performances, artists are working on other possibilities and potentiality for the stage, focusing on the presence of the performers, taking into account that audience is present too and composing a performing act that do not try to convey a message but simply to awaken the senses. Why they do so? Why to let the spectators free to feel and think what they most deeply wish in the present moment? If theatre has stopped representing and communicating, how to speak about what happens on stage? Which words to choose and which concepts to use? These are some of the questions the lecture will be attending, both through theoretical analysis and detailed study of concrete examples (video and live).
JEAN-FREDERIC CHEVALLIER is a French philosopher (last book : Deleuze about Theatre – Breaking up with Representation, Les Solitaires Intempestifs, France, 2015) and a theatre director (last performance: R/T Poetry 4 – Decoction moment in a Havana Church, Cuba, 2014). After teaching at Sorbonne University in Paris for two years and being professor at National University in Mexico for seven years, he is living in Kolkata since six years, working as director of Trimukhi Platform, a non-for-profit Bengali society intervening –mostly with Adhivashis– in three different directions: artistic creation, social action and theoretical research. Denis Guénoun, emeritus professor from the Sorbonne University in Paris, recently wrote: “Jean-Frédéric Chevallier is walking on a path, personal and professional, extremely singular. He conjugates a theoretical, philosophical work, and an intense theatre practice activity. He formulates in Spanish, English, Bengali and French, thesis and concepts about living arts through which he pursues without ceasing the new characterization of a “Theatre of Presenting.”
