"Not a just image but just an image"During four Saturdays' morning (10 am. to 1 pm., on 19th and 26th November, 3rd and 10th December 2011), Modern Academy of Continuing Education  and Trimukhi Platform organize in Kolkata, India, cine-club sessions to revisit Jean-Luc Godard's films. In each session a film is introduced, screened and then analysed by Dr. Jean-Frédéric Chevallier. The focus is on the very singular manner Godard has to take and edit motion pictures, to direct actors and to adress directly to the spectators.

Jean-Luc Godard is surely one the most famous French Nouvelle Vague filmmaker. His first series of films is particularly acknowledged, starting from the iconic movie Breathless and finishing with the political one The Chinese. But little has been seen of his production from the seventies till now. It's probably due to the fact that his very singular manner of taking and editing motion pictures, of directing actors, has sometimes surprised the audience and even produced misunderstanding. To help in the appreciation of his work, it can be useful to consider the different steps taken to compose the legacy. And by doing so, it will appear that the artistic question which has inhabited the film director's mind is somewhat simple: how to pass from one image to another and what happens between these two images?

In each session, one Godard’s film will be projected, preceded by a brief introduction on the film and followed by the analysis of a particular sequence of it.

" Now no one speaks about what there is on the screen but only about what the author wanted to mean. What the author wanted to say doesn’t have anything to do with what he shows. I don’t give a damn about what Nicholas Ray wants to say by doing Johnny Guitar."

    Jean-Luc Godard
